Unboxing – Recensione Logitech G502 X Lightspeed
Once the elegant package is opened we will find the mouse in front of us which, if lifted, will hide the LIGHTSPEED dongle and an additional button that we will analyze later. In the double bottom of the box, in addition to the information booklets, there is the rubberized USB-A to USB-C cable, as well as an adapter with the same inputs and a “Logitech G” sticker.
Since this is a not so cheap mouse (€ 166,00 for the model we tested), the equipment is slightly sparse. We would have appreciated, for example, additional PTFE feet to replace them in case of deterioration. The cable can be used to recharge the peripheral, it is true, but nothing prevents us from using it in wired mode. Instead of rubber, therefore, a soft fabric could be used to ensure better usability in any condition.
Let's analyze the mouse - Logitech G502 X Lightspeed review
Logitech G502 X Lightspeed is not proposed as an upgrade only in terms of hardware, but also in terms of aesthetics. In case you are a fan of its ancestors you will surely be used to sharp edges and a supercar line. Logitech has decided to sweeten everything by making it more in step with the times. First of all, we note the absence of the gutter created between the right and left buttons, occupied by an opaque gray band. The keys also change. The G7 and G8 buttons get longer, while the side G5 and G4 become wider.
The button next to the thumb that allows us to temporarily change the DPI is now modular and magnetic. We can put it in two different positions so that it is more or less close to the thumb. If necessary, however, if we do not want to use it, we can replace it with a rubber cap that will prevent us from operating the command, making it in effect an extension of the side part.
Speaking of materials, the mouse is made entirely of plastic. The entire upper body, including the left and right buttons, are opaque. The side parts are rubberized with a striped texture that certainly allows a firmer grip. The same rubber is also used to cover the wheel. The opaque plastic is flanked by the glossy one that characterizes all the secondary keys except the one near the thumb. Although the Logitech G502 X Lightspeed does not have any RGB lighting, there is no lack of LEDs that allow us to understand the DPI profile in use. This is placed in front of the wheel, set in the gray band.
Logitech G502 X Lightspeed vs Logitech G502 Lightspeed
Now let's move on to the features that differentiate the G502 X Lightspeed from its predecessor. First of all, on the front side, the entrance to recharge the device is no longer of the micro-USB type but USB-C. One of the differences that Logitech, listening to the community, has decided to make is to change the switches under the left and right buttons. Compared to the previous model, we have here proprietary switches named "LIGHTFORCE": a sort of union between an optical switch and a mechanical one. In the lower part, the possibility of magnetically disassembling the body disappears to remove or add weights.
Remain i PTFE feet, as well as the excellent "HERO 25K" sensor, the small magnetic compartment to go and insert the USB dongle directly inside the mouse and the button to turn the mouse off or on.
One of the technologies present in this mouse that could easily be considered a killer-app but unfortunately we have not had the opportunity to try is the "POWERPLAY". This is nothing more than the possibility of charging the mouse wirelessly using the dedicated pad. On paper, this is a great addition because it means you hardly ever have to connect the mouse via cable. Obviously, you will have to equip yourself with the second device which is definitely not for all budgets.
The weight also varies. While the ancestor reached 114 g (with the possibility of being further burdened), this, in white color, ne pesa unicamente 101. And if you were a fanatic, you could even remove the bottom lid to make it reach 99 g.
Our test - Logitech G502 X Lightspeed review
The way we hold the mouse is the most unusual. It is in fact the Fingertip Grip mode, where the movement is mainly governed by the thumb, little finger and ring finger, while creating a vacuum that does not allow the palm to rest on the mouse. By testing various titles (such as Valorant and CS: GO) and striving to change grip, the mouse is excellent in both Fingertip Grip and Palm Grip. For the Claw Grip the use is more difficult as it is a fairly large mouse. By removing the button near the thumb and installing the cap, you could benefit from it but, if you adopt this handle, we would like to advise you against this model.
Speaking of buttons, in our opinion, this Logitech G502 X Lightspeed is the perfect middle ground. MOBA mice, with many keys, are difficult to use in different contexts, while this (despite having keys) remains very versatile. Let's start immediately with the most interesting: the modular key. This is (by default) set to temporarily decrease the DPI if pressed and therefore serves to aim more precisely in case we play FPS. Given its magnetic anchor, we can turn it upside down and, therefore, bring it closer to our thumb, if not even remove it by inserting the cap. This is very useful if you are not a shooter lover or if you decide to use the mouse in a more productive context.
The new LIGHTFORCE switches located under the left and right buttons are great. We've never accidentally hit the right button. For us this is a rare occurrence as it happens very often with other mice. In summary, to press them you need to apply the right force: neither too much nor too little.
Then there is the button that passes the wheel from "classic mode" to "quick scroll mode". This is mainly useful in the case of video editing or business use (but also for scrolling web pages). The only sore point is that more often than not, the scroll wheel will jump pages slightly upward in case of quick movements.
Although we were used to mice with a more secluded form factor, we found the newcomer to Logitech very comfortable. All keys are easily accessible and, of course, mappable through the software Logitech G-Hub. From here we will be able to carry out the classic operations, including setting macros, mapping each button, changing the DPI that can be selected directly from the mouse or setting a different profile for each game or experience.
One of the strong points of the mouse is undoubtedly the battery life. Logitech has stated that G502 X Lightspeed can safely get to 140 hours of use, while the version with LED at 120. We can not help but give in since there is a dedicated setting in the program that allows us to have a report:
We draw conclusions
Logitech G502 X Lightspeed accompanied me for several hours and in different territories of use. As a lover of simple mice (like my Endgame Gear) I do not deny that I started slightly biased. This is not because I was hesitant about the goodness of Logi products, but because of the form factor that has always characterized one of the most purchased mice ever, such as the G502.
It didn't take hours to change my mind, but a handful of moments. This is certainly one of the most versatile mice on the market. Not only in terms of the number of keys, but also because it is difficult for it to be uncomfortable.
Net of some shortcomings, therefore, we recommend G502 X Lightspeed certainly also above the PLUS version which may look more beautiful, but it costs a little more and guarantees fewer hours of use.
