We had the pleasure of chatting with the small all-Spanish team of Bad Vices Games, which gave rise to this pleasant interview: let's get to know this newborn reality from the Marche better.
The indie market, the real one and made up of extremely small teams, often puts us in front of two profoundly dichotomous realities that start from the same common basis: the lack of funds. On the one hand we find confusing titles, without foundation and definitely too pretentious, and as an example we can bring you the recent Winter Ember, which we talked about in a dedicated review. On the other hand, however, there are those little pearls, which would have definitely deserved some extra money, and which do exactly what they were born to do: entertain. Whether they do it by doing something wrong, or by sinning in some technical side, it doesn't matter. The beauty, in these cases, lies in knowing how to involve the gamer even with short-lived titles, with a few pixels less, but which know how to give a good glimpse of what the independent market of the future will be. Yes, just like in the case of Ravenous Devils.
Small and extremely effective: let's get to know the guys from Bad Vices Games with this interview!
We told you about Ravenous Devils in a particularly enthusiastic review, which you can find by clicking here. This little indie was born from the hands of Bad Vices Games, an equally small (two people!) all-Spanish team based in the Marche region, in the province of Macerata. We had the opportunity to chat with the two members of the Bad Vices Games team, Cristian Gambadori and Eleonora Vecchi, from whom we then gave rise to this pleasant interview. A quick question and answer, but which gave us a more inside look at Ravenous Devils and the future projects of the team. Let's begin!
First of all, we thank you for this opportunity and let's start with the classic ritual question: how was your team born?
Bad Vices Games is a small development team born in the Marche, in the province of Macerata. There are two of us in the team, Cristian Gambadori and Eleonora Vecchi, we both attended a 3-year 3D modeling course in Pescara and that's where we met, between school desks and endless train journeys. After school we made the decision to give it a try and throw ourselves into this world, we are both great video game fans and it was normal for us to go in this direction.
A Victorian London dipped in blood | Bad Vices Games Interview
The setting of Victorian London always has its charm, especially when it is painted so well even with so few pixels. The inspiration for Sweeney Todd was pretty obvious, but we still wanted to know their main inspirations on it. And then… the question we all asked ourselves, playing Ravenous Devils.
The charm of Victorian cities is eternal and in Ravenous Devils you have managed to paint it in an extremely brilliant way, with well-chosen atmospheres and dark tones. What were your inspirations (besides, we imagine, the aforementioned Sweeney Todd)?
We have always been fascinated by the look of Victorian London and knew that sooner or later we would create something with this setting. Horror and macabre fascinate us and we look for them in every movie we see or book we read. Surely the obvious reference is to Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, but obviously he wasn't the only one who inspired us. Delicatessen, Ravenous, Little Horror Shop are just some of the movie names we've seen throughout development.
The biggest curiosity actually lies in another equally important aspect besides the setting… but how did you come up with a couple of anthropophagous psychopaths who manage a diner and a tailor's shop?
Initially the idea was to play only as the cook, but we soon realized the need for another character, someone to do the dirty work. Thus was born this diabolical couple. The association with Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett is then immediate, the characters in our game as in the film need each other.
Future plans | Bad Vices Games Interview
In closing we moved on to the usual questions, but this time, especially the first, they were very heartfelt. First of all because, one of the biggest flaws of Ravenous Devils in our opinion is that it really lasts too short, and it has left us as it leaves a light aperitif: tremendously hungry. Finally: some small previews on the future projects of Bad Vices Games!
Ravenous Devils was a delightful aperitif: savory and tasty, but which ended far too quickly. Have you planned any additional content to expand it?
Yes absolutely, we want to support the game and add some new content. We would like to create a new mode, a sort of endless mode detached from the main storyline. Many players have given us the idea for new elements to add that would enrich the gameplay. First of all, however, we want to add additional languages to allow as many players as possible to play our game.
What about the future outside of Ravenous Devils? Can you tell us something about your current or planned projects?
As for the future, we already have many ideas, some more achievable than others. For now they are just lines written on a sheet and therefore nothing is certain. What is certain is that we will not stop creating because it is what we are passionate about, trying every time to be more daring.
