The best graphic adventures: where to start? (Part I)

The world of video games contains titles and chapters for all tastes and budgets. In all the videogame chaos, graphic adventures cannot be missing, but which are the best? Well, mouse in hand because now we will find out together

When you are talking about graphic adventures, and we refer to the best ones or those left in the hearts of fans, the quality level is measured above all on the basis of the intuitive mechanics, the engaging atmospheres, the craziest stories and, more generally, for the level of attention and cunning that they are required of the player to complete his mission. Lair of these particular types of video games is usually the PC, but they should not be excluded, especially with the recent stratospheric evolution that they have had, the consoles.

In this regard we want you report the Czech series of Polda which, apparently, had quite mixed results especially when one of its last chapters ended up in the hands of Ludonic which is certainly not famous for the beauty of its titles. Quite the opposite for the lucky series of Deponia which, however recent it is, still maintains a rather lighthearted air, a nice cartoon graphics and a level of difficulty that goes hand in hand with the sense of humor that permeates the entire game.

Once this is said therefore we advise you to arm yourself with a mouse, patience, cunning and a nice sheet of paper to take notes that will come in handy during your very personal quest. So are you ready for a lot of "analyze", "observe", "use", "combine" and "talk with"?

Leaving for the Caribbean from Monkey Island

The protagonist of all these crazy chapters (including the most ignoble last ones) is il “pirate wannabe” Guybrush Threepwood who can't wait to realize his dream among buccaneers, cutthroats, undead, puzzles and many, really many, monkeys. Three-headed ones included! To season it all, some truly iconic characters like the beautiful and gritty one will think about it Governor Elaine Marley and the treacherous ghost pirate LeChuck. All to make the search for the infamous treasure Big Whoop even more "mythical" and unconventional.

The first two chapters of the saga, the more "pixellated" and classic ones, are among the favorites of the purists of the series as they were able to fully enjoy all the creative genius of Ron Gilbert and the practicality of the SCUMM engine. The third, more cartoonish and humorous, was a more ambivalent chapter for the most avid fans, but nothing to do with landing in three dimensions. which meant a real shipwreck. So retrieve the first three chapters and set off for one of the best graphic adventures ever.

Broken Sword - The best graphic adventures

George Stobbart and Nicole Collard are the pairing of the most famous protagonists of this whole point and click world, like the aforementioned Guybrush and Elaine, who will face the more intricate and arcane mysteries that distinguish humanity. After a fairly cartoonish debut in two dimensions, in second half of the nineties, the series is revolutionized and lands in three dimensions by exiting the PC to enter the latest generation consoles, portable and otherwise.

This more than fortunate saga (and with good reason) therefore consists of five chapters such as The Secret of the Templars (1996) The Prophecy of the Maya (1997) The Sleep of the Dragon (2003) The angel of Death (2006) and finally The Curse of the Serpent divided into two parts (2013 and 2014).

Syberia - The best graphic adventures

Born in 2002 from the collaboration between the Belgian cartoonist Benoît Sokal and the French company Microïds - the same behind XIII of 2003 and Asterix & Obelix XXL 3 of 2019 - "Syberia" is the first adventure of the fascinating and intrepid Kate Walker. Sent from her law firm to close a deal in the remote town of Valadilene with the task of detecting the activity of Voralberg on behalf of a large American toy factory, but things won't be that simple.

It seems indeed that the Voralberg family hides many secrets, including an heir believed to have been dead for years, guarded by theirs countless automata that keep company with the inhabitants of the French village. A plot that expertly mixes steampunk and noir atmospheres creating an aura of mystery and puzzles without equal, or maybe yes, since sequels will be released. These are therefore Syberia II of 2004, Syberia 3 2017 and Syberia: The World Before of 2021 although its postponement for PC was recently announced. Retrieve at least the first chapter just to try and then let yourself be carried away by the mystery!

Indiana Jones - The best graphic adventures

It is undeniable that the adventures of the most famous archaeologist in the world, played by the mythical Harrison Ford, have enchanted thousands and thousands of spectators who have seen his exploits on cinema screens first (with the exception of the disappointing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008) and then on televisions (The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones aired between 1994 and 1996).

Obviously there was no lack of video games, including those in LEGO version and more of an action / adventure one, and here we have two very good examples such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure (1989 – 1990 – 1992) and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992 - 1993) released for the computers of the time. To be clear MS - DOS, Amiga and so on.

If the first is the obvious videogame transposition of the film Indiana Jones and the last crusade, there was also a more adventure version called simply “The Action Game” like the other title. The second is instead an original story where our trusted archaeologist will have to go on the trail of the lost city par excellence. Obviously in both chapters the Nazis, the spies, the mysteries and the riddles will not be missing at all!

Grim Fandango - The best graphic adventures

Born from the brilliant mind of Tim Schafer, already seen in titles such as Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Psychonauts, here we are in a game that expertly mixes the noir atmospheres of the 20s and 30s with the cult of the dead typical of South America and pre-Columbian civilizations. Protagonist of this adventure of 1998, one came out remastered version for modern consoles in the 2015, is the travel agent manny skull which carries out its activity within the Land of the Dead and where he spends every day exactly the same.

All this until the beautiful newly passed away arrives Mercedes Colomar that will be lost in this land. Guess who will have to go and save her and foil a gang of crime (what a joke) linked to the dead? Absolute masterpiece of the same defunct Lucas Arts which must be recovered immediately "before it's too late"!
