Redmi has managed to implement a fully functional biometric sensor under an LCD display. The Chinese brand showed its business through a video posted on the social network, Weibo, by CEO Lu Weibing. As we all know, until now, the technology in question has remained exclusive to the most used OLED panels in the medium-high range of the smartphone market.
OLED screens, in fact, are more suitable for this type of sensor thanks to their reduced thickness compared to LCD displays. The thickness of the latter - or rather, the backlight layer - blocks the passage of the light necessary to "read" the fingerprints. Weibing explained that the technical limit was exceeded using a high transmittance film that allows the passage of infrared light.

The CEO says the new technology features an “infrared transmitter at the bottom of the display that reflects the fingerprint by emitting light. This crosses the screen and lights up the sensor that will complete the fingerprint verification ”. According to Redmi, therefore, the technology would be ready for mass production.
This is not the first time a working model has been shown. Huawei had already done so - in August - during the Developer Conference. While in June, the Chinese manufacturer BOE Display Technology announced that it had successfully developed an LCD panel capable of supporting the biometric sensor, adding that the start of mass production was scheduled for the end of 2019.
We don't know when Redmi intends to bring i first smartphones with a biometric sensor integrated under an LCD display, but it is not excluded that it may already do so in 2020. We'll see!
